Goodbye Dell Crapware (if you want)

June 24th, 2007

From CNET News Blog:

Dell.com customers buying an XPS system, Inspiron notebook or Dimension desktop can select a “no software preinstalled” option. This will eliminate productivity, ISP, photo and music software, but not everything.

I’ve been waiting to hear this for quite some time. Glad to see they’re finally allowing you to opt out of them putting so much crapware on your machine so that you can save some of the hours it takes to uninstall this junk when you get a new Dell.

No crap on the Ubuntu boxes Dell makes. This has been an option for a while now on for the business sector and it wasn’t free. That crapware subsidizes the cost of the computer so it the PC costs more with the crap removed.

Even the computers we order from the Public Sector site come with Google Desktop.

I’m not sure that it will affect the pricing since all of the software will still be included with the computer, just not installed unless you want it to be. Granted, this is not perfect since there are some things that they will install whether you want it or not, but it is a better option than having EVERYTHING installed on it.
